Description

An outstanding ‘8 day’ arched brass dial grandfather clock. One of the finest quality movements and cases by William Charles of Chepstow.

In addition an amazing high quality Bristol design cabinet. Showing the finest case features from this area. Including ‘wobbly door and base’.The base standing on ‘OG’ bracket feet, long trunk door with reeded chamfered sides. The hood with lovely swan neck pediments. Together with fretwork beneath and reeded hood columns.

Above all the movement of high quality workmanship striking the hours on a single bell. The dial with chapter ring and spandrels. Superbly engraved dial centre. Subsidiary seconds and calendar feature also to the dial centre. To the arch moon phase, tidal times showing High Water at Bristol Key.

William Charles is recorded in Linnard, William WALES Clocks & Clockmakers as working from premises in Beaufort Square Chepstow circa 1745-78.

The original owner of the clock must of been a highly influential individual at the time. Probably a merchant who required knowing the tidal times at Bristol. Bristol being a hugely important port in the 18th century.
