A simply outstanding late 18th century lacquer 8 day grandfather clock with arched brass dial and automaton to the arch.

A wonderful C1780 8 day duration arched brass dial longcase clock. Together with rocking ship automaton depicting the 100 gun first rate ship of the Royal Navy HMS Britannia. Signed to the dial by Daniel Barrett of Chatham London. HMS Britannia was ordered on 25th April 1751, launched 19th October 1762 and commissioned September 1778. She fought in the Battle of Cape St Vincent, featured in the War of American Independence. She also fought in the Battle of Trafalgar.

The dial with matted centre, recessed seconds, subsidiary calendar, chapter ring and spandrels. The fine 5 pillar movement striking the hours on a single bell. The wonderful case decorated to trunk door with rare painted scenes.
