An outstanding George III mahogany longcase regulator by John Holmes, Strand, London. C1780. Together with the hood with moulded break arch cornice over canted reeded corners and panelled sides The small silvered dial engraved with the makers name Also with sweep minute hand to the chapter ring enclosing a subsidiary seconds dial and crescent shaped hour aperture below.

The stunning quality eight pillar eight day movement with dead beat escapement and bolt and shutter maintaining power. Also with brass cased weight and steel pendulum with brass faced bob and screw micro adjustment The cabinet with flame veneered trunk door over a panelled base on plinth support.

John Holmes was regarded as one of the finest clock-makers of his time and F. J. Britten comments “he seems to have been one among the leading mechanicians and when the turret clock at Greenwich Hospital was destroyed by fire in 1779, was given the order for a new one… the Wetherfield Collection contains two long mahogany case clocks of his manufacture, one a particularly choice example of Chippendale dating from about 1770….”( 4th edtn, 1919).A collectors clock of the highest quality.
